About This Drug
Acetaminophen is an analgesic and antipyretic (anti-fever) medication available by prescription and over-the-counter. It is used by individuals who either do not want to use or who are sensitive or allergic to aspirin or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Acetaminophen is most commonly used to relieve fever and pain associated with the common cold, flu, other viral infections, and other conditions characterized by pain and fever. Many people also take it to relieve headache, menstrual cramps, arthritis pain, and toothache, even though it is not effective against inflammation. Children are given acetaminophen to relieve fever and for pain and discomfort associated with the common cold, flu, immunizations, teething, and tonsillectomy.
