Important Precautions
- Liver inflammation is a common reaction of this drug, but it usually reverses once the drug is stopped. If you have liver obstruction, abnormally high levels of albendazole may be detected in your blood. Your health-care practitioner should monitor your blood levels and liver function while you take this drug.
- Although albendazole is rarely used in children younger than 6 years, no unusual problems have been noted.
- Due to rare instances of leukopenia, pancytopenia, agranulocytosis, granulocytopenia, and neutropenia, which may be life-threatening, regular blood count monitoring should be conducted during treatment. Consult your health-care practitioner regarding effective monitoring.
Pregnant Women
Albendazole may cause birth defects. If you are a woman of childbearing age, you must take a pregnancy test, and have a negative result, before you can start treatment with albendazole. While taking this drug, and for one month after stopping, you must avoid becoming pregnant. If you become pregnant while being treated, you must stop the drug at once.
If you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, talk to your health-care practitioner before starting albendazole. Only a health-care practitioner can weigh the potential benefits versus the potential risks.
Seniors
No special precautions are needed for seniors. However, adverse reactions may be more severe.
