About This Drug
The drug combination of amlodipine/atorvastatin brings together two commonly prescribed heart medications. It is the first drug to treat high blood pressure and high cholesterol and is used primarily in the treatment of hypertension and chronic stable angina.
Atorvastatin is a statin drug that blocks the effects of an enzyme known as HMG-CoA reductase, which in turn blocks the production of cholesterol and triglycerides. Amlodipine (a calcium channel blocker) interferes with the movement of calcium into heart muscles, which in turn relaxes the blood vessels, reduces heart rate, and results in a lowering of blood pressure and reduced chest pain.
