Important Precautions

  • Atomoxetine may increase suicidal ideation in children and adolescents. Any fluctuations in mood, emergent symptoms of anxiety or mental distress, or behavioral changes should be reported to your health-care practitioner immediately.
  • Rare instances of severe liver failure have been reported in postmarketing data. Patients should have their liver function tested prior to initiation of treatment and periodically throughout treatment.
  • Tell your health-care practitioner if you are sensitive or allergic to atomoxetine or to any other drugs.
  • Because this drug can cause dizziness, make sure you know how you react to it before you drive or operate hazardous equipment.
  • No studies of the effectiveness or safety of this drug or its effects on height and weight have been done beyond 10 weeks. Thus if you require longer-term treatment, your health-care practitioner should monitor you or your child closely.
  • Before taking atomoxetine, talk to your health-care practitioner if you have a liver disorder. Also use this drug with caution if you have high blood pressure, tachycardia (abnormally rapid heartbeat), urinary retention or hesitancy, cardiovascular disease, or cerebrovascular disease. If you have narrow-angle glaucoma, you should not take atomoxetine.
  • During trials, atomoxetine slowed children’s average rate of growth. It is not known whether final adult height and weight are affected. Your health-care practitioner may interrupt use of atomoxetine for your child if he or she is not growing or gaining weight at the expected rate.

Pregnant Women

Adequate studies of the effects of atomoxetine on pregnant or nursing women have not been done. If you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant, talk to your health-care practitioner. Only a health-care practitioner can determine whether the potential benefits outweigh the risks.

It is not known whether atomoxetine passes into breast milk. If you are breastfeeding, your health-care practitioner will likely advise you to switch to bottle-feeding until your treatment is complete.

Seniors

Side effects are more likely to occur and to be more severe in older adults.
