Backgammon Basics

Backgammon is one of the oldest and most popular board games in the world. It’s a two-player contest that involves skill, luck, and, occasionally, gambling. Because of its fast pace, backgammon is exciting. And since luck plays a significant role, beginners can sometimes beat experts for at least a few games. Backgammon games are usually short—most take less than 15 minutes—so it is often played in matches consisting of multiple games.

Object of the Game

The object of backgammon is to advance your 15 pieces, called checkers, around and off the board before your opponent does the same. The roll of two dice determines what moves you’re allowed to make. You can block your opponent’s checkers, send them backward, and even prevent your opponent from rolling the dice altogether. It’s customary to refer to the player who controls the light-colored checkers as white and the player who controls the dark-colored checkers as black.
