Blackjack Rules and Variations

Blackjack’s basic rules and game play vary little from one casino to another. There are three main types of rules variations that can affect the game:
  • Player rules variations: Limits on, or extended options for, blackjack game play
  • Dealer rules variations: Slight differences that specify how the dealer must play his or her hand
  • Number of decks: Some games are single-deck (using just one deck in the shoe), but most casino games are multideck (using up to eight decks in the shoe).
The rules for a particular blackjack table are usually posted on the table itself or on a nearby sign. If you’re not certain of the rules for your table, don’t hesitate to ask the dealer.

Player Rules Variations

The most important player rule variation stipulates when you’re allowed to double down.
  • Some tables let you double down only on your first two cards.
  • Other tables let you double down on your first two cards and after you’ve split a pair.
For example, let’s say you’ve split a pair of 7s and have received a 4 on one of them, for a total of 11 on that hand. If your table allows doubling down after splitting a pair, you would be able to double down on this split hand. If your table does not allow doubling after splitting, you would be allowed only to hit or stand on your 11.

Surrender

A somewhat less common player option is called surrender. This allows you to give up an unfavorable hand after receiving your first two cards. To surrender, say, “I surrender” as soon as it’s your turn. The dealer will take half of your original wager, return the other half to you, and continue with the other players’ hands.

Dealer Rules Variations

Though the blackjack player has many options from which to choose, the dealer’s options are relatively restricted. The dealer can never double down or split and, in general, must hit or stand according to the following rules:
  • The dealer must hit all hands totaling 16 or less.
  • The dealer must stand on hands totaling 17 or more.
The one variation for this rule is for a soft 17 (an ace and a 6, for example). At some casinos, the dealer must hit on a soft 17. At others the dealer must stand on soft 17. This variation can affect your strategy, so be sure you know which option is in effect for the game you’re playing. This guide explains the proper strategy for each scenario.

Number of Decks

A blackjack game may use anywhere from 1–8 decks, with 6 decks being standard and 1, 2, and 4 decks being the most common variations. The number of decks in the game can affect your strategy, so make sure you’re aware of how many are in use.
