Digital Camera Software
There are two types of software that digital photographers use to view, organize, and edit their digital photos: image-management software, and image-editing software.
Image-Management Software
Although digital photos don’t take up physical space until you print them, as you take photos you’ll amass a library of digital photo files. Image-management software brings order to the chaos of digital photo libraries by allowing you to view, classify, and sort images based on a number of criteria. Some of the most popular software programs include:
- Picasa®: A free software tool that lets you find, edit, and share photos stored on your computer. It works only on PCs running Windows or the Linux operating system. Available at picasa.google.com.
- Adobe Photoshop Album®: A $50 software program that helps you share, sort, and even edit photos. Available at www.adobe.com/products.
- iPhoto®: Apple’s entry-level photo management software helps you organize your photos and publish them online. It also creates note cards and calendars based on your photos. Available as part of Apple’s iLife® software suite ($79) at www.apple.com/ilife.
Image Editing Software
Image editing software is essential for editing digital photos: doing touch-ups, correcting color, adding special effects, cutting and pasting, and much more. The four most popular image-editing software platforms are:
- Adobe Photoshop®: This top-of-the-line photo editing software has more features than beginners need.
- Photoshop Elements®: This affordable alternative to Photoshop has all the features beginners need. It’s available for $89.99 at www.adobe.com/products.
- Paint Shop Pro®: Another Photoshop alternative for beginners, it’s available for $99.99 at www.corel.com.
- GIMP®: Download this free editing software for Mac and Linux at www.gimp.org.
