Canasta
Canasta is a matching card game from the rummy family, a group of games in which players must create melds in order to score points and ultimately get rid of all the cards in their hand. In canasta, the first player to reach 5,000 or more points over several rounds of play is declared the winner.
A Brief History of Canasta
Canasta was invented in 1939 when two bridge partners, an attorney and an architect in Uruguay, decided to create a new card game. Before long, canasta caught on in the card clubs in Uruguay, then spread from there to Argentina and beyond. The game quickly reached the United States, where a canasta craze exploded in the 1950s. Suddenly, canasta was challenging bridge in worldwide popularity.
Though canasta is a relatively recent invention, it has spawned an unusually large number of rule variations. By the height of canasta’s popularity in the 1950s, these variations had become a source of confusion for many players and began to affect the game’s standing. Canasta’s rules were subsequently standardized into what is now called classic canasta, but many other variations are still played, including modern American canasta, samba, and hand and foot.
