How to Play Hand and Foot

Hand and foot uses five decks of cards plus jokers—270 cards in total, all shuffled together. At the beginning of each round, the dealer deals each player two sets of 13-card hands: a “hand,” which is played first, and a “foot,” which is used after all the cards in the “hand” have been played.

The rules of play for hand and foot are the same as classic canasta, with these important exceptions:
  • Draw two rule: Players always draw two cards from the stock at the beginning of a turn and discard one at the end.
  • Wild melds allowed: As in modern American canasta, melds and canastas made of only wild cards are allowed. Wild canastas are worth 1,500 points.
  • Picking up the discard pile: If you choose to pick up cards from the discard pile, you may pick up only the top seven cards or fewer. You still must be able to meld the top card with two cards from your hand.
  • Moving from “hand” to “foot”: If you use all the cards in your “hand” on a single turn, you may immediately pick up your “foot” and continue to use the new set of cards on that turn. If you finish a turn by melding all cards but one, you may end that turn by discarding the final card of the “hand,” then begin your next turn by picking up and playing with your “foot.”
