How to Play Samba
In samba, you can meld sequences of the same suit in
addition to the usual sets of the same rank allowed in classic
canasta. For example, you can meld 9-10-J as long as the cards are of the same suit. A sequence of seven cards is called a samba and counts for 1,500 points. There are
additional rules particular to samba:
- A game is usually played to 10,000 points.
- A team must form at least two seven-card sequences (either canastas or sambas) before they’re permitted to go out, rather than the one canasta required before going out in classic canasta.
- Players draw two cards from the stock rather than one.
- As in modern American canasta, the discard pile is always frozen.
A further variation, called Bolivia, follows the same rules as samba but lets you form melds and canastas entirely of wild cards. Wild canastas, called Bolivias, are worth 2,500 points.
