Getting Started
The slip stitch is a versatile and functional stitch. Use it to create a firm finished edge, to join two finished crocheted pieces, or a new skein of yarn to your crochet project, or when you change yarn color. Combine the slip stitch with other stitches to form fancy stitches that look complicated.
As versatile as it is, the slip stitch is most commonly used to join one end of a foundation chain to the opposite end, forming a ring. The ring then forms the foundation for working pieces in the round.
To make a slip stitch, insert your hook into a stitch. Yarn over the hook and draw the yarn through the stitch and the loop on your hook. You’ll have one loop left on your hook (see figure 1).
