Getting Started

Felting produces the perfect fortune cookie-like texture and ensures your cookies hold their shape. The photo below shows the difference between a felted and un-felted cookie.

Felting By Hand

For one cookie, use hot water and a generous quantity of mild detergent. Vigorously massage the cookie to felt. Rinse well with cold water, shape, and air dry.

Felting By Machine

To felt several cookies, place a cosmetic puff inside each cookie to keep the sides separated and to help each cookie hold its shape. To reduce lint build-up in the washer, the cookies may be placed inside a large lingerie bag or pillow protector before washing. Place the cookies in the washer along with a few towels or pairs of jeans. Wash on hot wash cycle with a generous portion of mild detergent. Shape cookie and dry by machine or allow to air dry.

Skill Level

  • Beginner

You Will Need

(Makes one fortune cookie)

  • Approximately 17yd/16m worsted weight 100% felting wool, light gold
  • Hook, 4.0mm/G-6 or size needed to obtain gauge
  • Stitch marker
  • Tape measure
  • Yarn needle
  • 3/4" x 4"/2 x 10cm strip of paper

Felting Supplies

  • Cosmetic ball (synthetic, not cotton)
  • Washing machine and dryer
  • Lingerie bag or pillow protector
  • Jeans or towels (for added agitation)
  • Mild detergent

Gauge

  • Cookie circle before felting = 4"/10cm diameter
  • Always take time to check your gauge.

Pattern Notes

Be sure to use 100% wool that is appropriate for felting; do not use yarn that is known as super wash. Cookie is crocheted in continuous spiral; do not join rounds (unless otherwise instructed). Mark beginning of first round and move marker as each new round is started. You will be crocheting with the wrong side of the cookie facing.

Stitches Used

  • Chain (ch)
  • Single crochet (sc)
  • Slip stitch (sl st)

Materials Used in the Fortune Cookies

  • 1 skein of Plymouth Galway, 100% pure wool, 3-1/2 oz/100g = 210yd/192m, in color #104 (1 skein will make 12 cookies)

Finished Measurement

  • Approximately 2-1/2"/6.5cm diameter, after felting
