Instructions

Cutting the Fabric

  1. Cut two 18" x 12" (45.7 x 30.5 cm) rectangles from the fabric. Measure 1-1⁄2" (3.8 cm) from each top corner. Draw a diagonal line from this point to the lower corner on the same side (see figure 6).

  2. Cut off the sides of the fabric along the lines.
  3. Use the geometry compass and fabric pen to round off the two bottom corners. Cut off the corners as marked.

Transferring the Design

  1. Transfer the Café Cup design to the right corner of the wider end of one of the fabric shapes so that the Threaded Running Stitch borders can be stitched 1-1⁄2" (3.8 cm)—or more—in from the side and bottom edges.

Embroidering the Design

  1. Embroider the design. Extend the Threaded Running Stitch to the top of the apron on the right hand side, along the bottom, and up the left side (see figure 7).

Sewing the Apron

  1. Line up the two fabric shapes with the embroidery on the inside and pin them together. Sew around the sides and bottom 1⁄2" (1.3 cm) in from the edges.
  2. Cut small notches in the fabric around the rounded corners, up to—but not through—the stitching line. This will help smooth the edges. Turn the apron right side out and iron the seams flat.
  3. Topstitch around the sides and bottom, 1⁄2" (1.3 cm) in from the edges.
  4. Center the ribbon—vertically and horizontally—along the top edge of the apron. You should have an equal amount of ribbon extending beyond both sides, for waist ties. The upper half of the ribbon should extend beyond the upper fabric edge.

Adding the Ribbon

  1. Fold the ribbon in half lengthwise over the top edge of the fabric, to the underside. Make sure there’s an equal amount of ribbon on both sides of the fabric and that the edges are lined up. Pin the ribbon in place and sew it in position through all three of the layers: the front half of the ribbon, the apron fabric, and the back half of the ribbon (see figure 8).
