How to Wash Fine China
Though some china is dishwasher safe, it’s never a bad idea to err on the side of caution if you aren’t entirely sure about a particular piece of fine or antique china. When washing fine china dishware or serving dishes by hand, follow
these guidelines:
- Wash in warm, sudsy water.
- Wash in a plastic tub or place a rubber or plastic mat or a towel in the bottom of the sink to protect the china from knocking against the sides of the sink.
- Never use scouring pads or any other abrasive tool or detergent when washing china.
How to Remove Stains from China
In general, if china becomes stained, you can usually
remove the stain by soaking the china in warm, sudsy water for half an hour before washing it. As a last resort, you can soak the china in a mild bleach solution (1 teaspoon bleach per quart of water) for no more than an hour, then wash as usual.
How to Remove Hard Water Stains from China
To remove hard water stains from china, soak the china in a solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water for half an hour.
