Common Houseplant Insects
Dozens of types of insects can live in or on houseplants. Some can be beneficial, but most are harmful. Some of the most common harmful insects are:
Aphids

- Traits: Small green, black, yellow, or red insects.
- Symptoms: Distorted plant tips and leaves. Mold may be present.
- Remedy: Spray leaf undersides and any active aphids with insecticide.
Earwigs

- Traits: Dark brown–bodied insects with pincer tail.
- Symptoms: Plants have holes or appear skeletal.
- Remedy: Thoroughly hand-pick all earwigs off of the plant.
Fungus Gnats

- Traits: Winged, grayish, gnatlike insects in soil and on leaves.
- Symptoms: Wilting or, in young plants, stunted growth.
- Remedy: Spray with insecticide.
Mealy Bugs

- Traits: Small, white, fluffy-looking insects on leaves.
- Symptoms: Wilted or yellow leaves.
- Remedy: Wipe off with a damp cloth or spray with household insecticide.
Spider Mites

- Traits: Tiny red mites on undersides of leaves.
- Symptoms: Leaves with blotches or fine white webbing.
- Remedy: Wipe the entire plant with insecticidal soap.
