Flowering Houseplants

Flowering houseplants have buds that produce flowers, which can last from a few days to several months.

Houseplant identification can be difficult if perhaps you’ve lost the plant’s care tag or your plant didn’t come with one. The following foliage and flowering houseplant pictures will help you if you’re trying to identify houseplants.

African Violet

  • Light: Medium to high.
  • Temp: Moderate; sensitive to sudden changes.
  • Water: Constantly moist but not saturated; bottom or top water; don’t wet leaves; can keep on tray of moist pebbles.
  • Feed: Use food made specifically for African violets every few weeks.

Amaryllis

  • Light: High, indirect.
  • Temp: Moderate.
  • Water: Occasional moisture when plant is in bloom.
  • Feed: Use a well-diluted complete fertilizer every 2–3 weeks.

Anthurium

  • Light: High.
  • Temp: Day: warm; night: moderate.
  • Water: Water when soil feels slightly dry.
  • Feed: Use a fertilizer with a high phosphorous content once a month when plant is blooming.

Azalea

  • Light: High, indirect.
  • Temp: Cool.
  • Water: Constant moisture with good drainage.
  • Feed: Every few weeks with fertilizer for acid-loving plants.

Bromeliad

  • Light: High, indirect.
  • Temp: Day: moderate; night: cool.
  • Water: Pour room temperature water directly into the stalk opening or “cup,” once a week or more (cup should never be completely empty); mist occasionally.
  • Feed: Use a diluted, complete liquid fertilizer every few months.

Christmas Cactus

  • Light: Bright, indirect.
  • Temp: Day: moderate; night: cool.
  • Water: Water when soil feels slightly dry.
  • Feed: Complete fertilizer every 2–3 weeks while plant is blooming; once a month after it stops.

Crysanthemum (Potted)

  • Light: High to moderate.
  • Temp: Cool.
  • Water: Constant moisture.
  • Feed: Don’t fertilize while plant is blooming.

Cyclamen

  • Light: High, indirect.
  • Temp: Cool.
  • Water: Water when soil feels slightly dry.
  • Feed: Use a well diluted, complete fertilizer once a month or so.

Gardenia

  • Light: High.
  • Temp: Day: warm; night: moderate.
  • Water: Constant moisture but never saturated; high humidity.
  • Fertilizer: Use a food for acid-loving plants every few weeks from spring to fall; do not feed while plant is flowering.

Gloxinia

  • Light: High, indirect.
  • Temp: Warm.
  • Water: Constant moisture; don’t wet leaves.
  • Feed: Feed with a high phosphorous fertilizer every 2 weeks.

Hibiscus

  • Light: High.
  • Temp: Warm to moderate.
  • Water: Constant moisture.
  • Feed: Complete, water-soluble fertilizer every few weeks.

Kalanchoe

  • Light: High, indirect.
  • Temp: Moderate.
  • Water: Water when soil feels dry.
  • Feed: Complete liquid fertilizer every 2–3 weeks while flowering.

Paperwhite

  • Light: Medium to high.
  • Temp: Cool.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when soil feels dry.
  • Feed: Don’t fertilize while plant is in flower.

Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum)

  • Light: Medium.
  • Temp: Moderate.
  • Water: Water thoroughly when soil feels dry.
  • Feed: Use a diluted complete fertilizer every few months.

Poinsettia

  • Light: High, indirect.
  • Temp: Warm to moderate; plant is sensitive to drops in temperature.
  • Water: Keep soil evenly moist.
  • Feed: Fertilize with a complete fertilizer after blooms fade.

Winter-Flowering Begonia

  • Light: Medium.
  • Temp: Moderate.
  • Water: Constant moisture.
  • Feed: Complete liquid fertilizer every 2-3 weeks.
