Keyboard Shortcuts Basics

A keyboard shortcut is a keystroke or a combination of two or three keystrokes that you can use to execute a command in a computer program more quickly than you could by clicking with a mouse. This guide includes all of the built-in keyboard shortcuts for Illustrator CS3. Almost all of these shortcuts also work in Illustrator CS and CS2, though not as many will work in earlier versions of Illustrator.

How to Customize Illustrator’s Shortcuts

In addition to providing hundreds of built-in keyboard shortcuts, Illustrator lets you create new custom shortcuts or modify existing shortcuts.
  1. Click on Edit in the main toolbar to open the Edit drop-down menu.
  2. Click on Keyboard Shortcuts.
  3. In the dialog box that appears, you’ll see two drop-down menus. In the second drop-down, select the category of shortcuts that you’d like to customize. The two categories are Tools and Menu Commands.
  4. Once you select a category, you’ll see a list of the commands and built-in shortcuts that the category contains. The Menu Commands category contains various subcategories, which are indicated by arrows to the left of the subcategory name—click on these arrows to show or hide the commands and shortcuts that the subcategory contains.
  5. Not all commands have built-in shortcuts, though you can assign your own shortcuts to these commands. To assign a shortcut, click on a command that does not have a shortcut listed in the right column, then click on the empty space below the word “Shortcut“ and type in a combination of keys to serve as your new shortcut. Illustrator will alert you and force you to change the key combination if it is the same as a combination that’s already used by an existing shortcut.
  6. To modify an existing shortcut, click directly on its shortcut keys, enter a new key combination and click the Change button. Again, Illustrator will alert you to any conflicts.
  7. When you’ve finished making all of the changes you’d like to make to a shortcut (or to your entire set of custom shortcuts), click the Save button.
  8. In the Save Keyset File dialog box that appears, enter a name for your new set of shortcuts and click OK.
From now on, Illustrator will load your custom set of shortcuts when you start Illustrator. To use the default set instead, click on Keyboard Shortcuts in the Edit menu and choose Illustrator Defaults in the drop-down menu next to the word “Set,” then click OK.

How to Use Illustrator Shortcuts on a Mac

The shortcuts listed in this guide are for PCs, but most will also work on Macs with just two slight modifications:
  • Instead of the Ctrl key: Use the Command key
  • Instead of the Alt key: Use the Option key
