How to Prepare a Space for Painting
Painting would be a breeze if you were always working in an empty room. But this is rarely the case: there’s almost always something underfoot or in the way. Furniture, light fixtures, and carpeting are just a few of the things you need to protect before you start working with paint.
- Begin by removing all window treatments, including curtains, drapes, blinds, and shades. If it’s not too difficult, remove the mounting hardware as well.
- Move all small pieces of furniture out of the room and big pieces of furniture into one corner. Roll up any area rugs and pads and take them out of the room as well.
- Protect flooring—especially wall-to-wall carpeting—by covering it with plastic sheeting or drop cloths.
- Cover any furniture remaining in the room with plastic sheeting. Make sure all pieces of furniture are covered completely, legs included.
- Use plastic sheeting or garbage bags to cover ceiling- and wall-mounted light fixtures. Tape the sheeting or bags together with masking tape.
- Turn off the electric power to the room at the service panel. Then remove all the switch and receptacle cover plates from their boxes.
- Remove any cabinet hardware, such as drawer pulls and door knobs, to facilitate the painting process. It's not necessary to remove hinges; instead, cover them with painter’s tape.
