How to Make and Receive Calls with Your iPhone

To make a call with your iPhone, tap the Phone icon in the lower left corner of the Home screen.

You’ll be brought to a window with five icons across the bottom that provide access to the iPhone’s call features:

  • Favorites: A list of the numbers that you call most often. To call someone on your Favorites list, tap the name once. To add a phone number to your Favorites, tap the + button in the upper right corner and select a number from one of your contacts.
  • Recents: A list of your most recent calls. To call one of these phone numbers, tap once on the name or phone number. You can select to view either All or only Missed recent calls on this list by tapping the appropriate button at the top of the screen.
  • Contacts: A list of your contacts. Flick or scroll up and down the list of contacts. When you find the name of the person you want to call, tap it once. The contact’s info page will appear. Tap the number you’d like to dial—home, mobile, work, etc. (For more on how to manage contacts, see “How to Add and Edit Contacts,” later in this section.)
  • Keypad: A numerical keypad similar to what you’d find on a traditional phone. To use this to dial a number that’s not in your contacts, dial the number and then tap the green Call button.
  • Voicemail: Access to your voicemail messages. (For more details, see How to Use Voicemail on Your iPhone.)
Once you’ve made a call, a new screen appears with icons that let you mute your end of the call, place the caller on speaker, place the caller on hold, add one or more other callers to make a conference call, access your contacts, access the keypad, or hang up.

Though the icons are available throughout your call, your iPhone’s screen will go dark temporarily while the iPhone is next to your ear.

How to Receive Phone Calls

When someone calls you, green Answer and red Decline buttons will appear on the screen. Tap the green button to answer the call. If you were in the middle of doing something else on your iPhone (looking at a website, typing an email, and so on) when you answered the phone, the iPhone will return you to what you were doing once you end the call.

Receiving a Call While the iPhone Is in Sleep Mode

If the iPhone is in Sleep mode and receives a call, you can answer it by dragging the Slide to Answer slider (identical to the Slide to Unlock slider). If you don’t want to answer the call, you can silence the ringer by pressing either the Sleep/Wake button on the top of the iPhone or the Volume button on the side of the iPhone.

How to Add and Edit Contacts

To add a new contact:
  1. From the Home screen, tap the Phone icon.
  2. Tap the Contacts icon.
  3. Tap the + button in the upper right corner. The New Contact screen will appear.
  4. Tap anywhere in the Name field (where it says “First Last”). The keyboard will appear. Enter the name of the new contact. Tap Save.
  5. Tap each field for which you want to add information. Each time you finish entering an email address, phone number, or other data, be sure to tap Save.
  6. When you’ve completed all the information for the new contact, tap Save.

How to Edit an Existing Contact

To edit information for an existing contact:
  1. Go to the Contacts page and find the name you’d like to edit. Tap the name. The contact’s Info screen appears.
  2. Tap Edit in the upper right corner.
  3. Make and save any changes.

How to Add a Ringtone for a Contact

To assign a particular ringtone to one of your contacts:
  1. Select a contact from the Contacts screen.
  2. Tap the Ringtone field in the contact’s Info screen. A list of available ringtones appears. Tap the one you want.
  3. Tap Info to return to the Info screen.
