How to Surf the Web on Your iPhone

The iPhone offers a fully functional version of Safari, Apple’s web browser. With Safari, you can view web pages as you would on your home computer. To access the web:
  1. Tap the Safari icon located in the bottom row of icons on the Home screen.

  2. Safari will launch and take you to the web page you were looking at when you were last using Safari.
  3. On the Safari page, you’ll see the browser address bar along the top. It will contain the URL of the web page you’re viewing.
  4. To move to a new page, tap on the address bar. The address bar will grow bigger, a Google search window will appear beneath it, the web page you were looking at will be grayed out, and the onscreen keyboard will appear.
  5. To enter a new URL, tap the address bar window and type in the web address. (The onscreen keyboard conveniently offers a “.com” button so that you don’t have to type those four characters manually every time.) Alternatively, you can tap the Google window and type in a search term.

  6. Tap Go, and the new page will load.
Once the web page is loaded, you can view it using the same finger strokes you normally use to navigate your iPhone:
  • Zoom in or out: In addition to spreading or squeezing your thumb and forefinger, tapping twice will also zoom the page in or out.
  • Scroll: Flick up, down, left, right, or diagonally.
  • Follow hyperlinks: Tap the links.
  • Return to the top of the screen: Double-tap at the top of the touchscreen.
  • View in landscape mode: Turn the iPhone horizontally.
Five icons along the bottom of every Safari screen provide several additional functions:

The Pages icon tells you how many browser windows you have open. You can then:
  • See all open pages: Flick left or right.
  • Select a page: Tap the page you want.
  • Open a new page: Tap New Page at the bottom left.
  • Close a page: Tap the red X on the corner of the page.

How to Add a Bookmark

To add a bookmark to your Bookmarks page, navigate to the page you want to bookmark, tap the + button, and then tap Add Bookmark.

How to Email a Web URL

iPhone lets you share websites by emailing links to your friends. Navigate to the page you want to share, tap the + button, and then tap Mail Link to This Page. Enter the email address of the person to whom you’d like to send the web page.

Safari Settings

You can adjust a number of Safari preferences—such as pop-up blocking, the default search engine, and so on—by accessing Safari’s settings through the Settings button on the Home screen.
