How to Use Email on Your iPhone
Email on your iPhone will look similar to the way it looks on your computer. The iPhone supports full-color graphics, photos, and HTML, and you can download many file types and view them as attachments.
Adding a Mail Account to Your iPhone
The easiest way to configure a new mail account on your iPhone is through iTunes during the syncing process (see “How to Sync Mail Accounts” in How to Sync Your iPhone). You can also add an email account using just your iPhone:
- From the Home screen, tap the Settings icon.
- Scroll down the Settings list and tap Mail.
- On the Mail Settings page, under Accounts, you’ll see your existing email accounts (if any). Underneath those accounts is an Add Account button. Tap it.
- A menu appears listing Microsoft Exchange, Yahoo! Mail, Gmail, MobileMe, AOL, and Other. If you have an account with any of the listed providers, all you have to do is tap the appropriate provider and enter your name, email address, and password. Your iPhone will do the rest, and you will then automatically receive email from those accounts.
- If you have an email account through another provider, tap Other.
- If Mail can’t set up your email account automatically, refer to the documentation from your email provider on how to manually set up an email account.
How to Check Mail
You can set your iPhone to check automatically for new email:
- From the Home screen, tap Settings, then Mail.
- Tap Auto-Check. On the next screen you can choose from four options: Manual, Every 15 minutes, Every 30 minutes, or Every hour. Tap your selection.
If you select Manual, the iPhone will still check for new mail every time you open the Mail program.
How to Read Mail
- From the Home screen, tap the Mail icon located in the bottom row of icons next to the Phone icon. If the Mail icon shows a small red bubble with a number in it, this number indicates how many new messages you have
waiting for you.

- Tapping the Mail icon will take you to the last screen you were on when you left the Mail screen. For instance, if you were reading an email from a friend, you’ll be returned to that email when you tap Mail. To return to a higher screen, tap the left-facing arrow in the upper left corner. This arrow will read Inbox, Mailboxes, or Accounts depending on which page you’re viewing.
- If you’re on the top screen—which lists the mail account(s) you’ve configured on your iPhone—tap the mail account you want to view, then tap Inbox.
- A list of the email messages in the Inbox of the email account you selected will appear. You can scroll or flick up and down the list. A blue dot next to a message indicates that the message is unread.
- To select a message you want to read, tap it. The
new message will appear on the screen. You can
scroll or flick up and down the message to read the entire message.

When you’re reading an email, a new set of icons appears along the bottom of the screen that allow you to check mail
, move the current message to a folder
, delete the current message
, reply to or forward the current message
, or compose a new message
.
, delete the current message When you’re finished reading a message, tap the Inbox arrow in the upper left corner to return to the inbox, or use the up/down arrows in the upper right corner to see the next or previous message.
How to View Email Attachments
iPhone’s mail program supports a number of file types, including Microsoft Office files, PDFs, and HTML. You can’t edit these files, though. You can only view them. Supported file types include .doc, .docx, .htm, .html, .pdf, .key, .numbers, .pages, .ppt, .pptx, .txt, . vcf, .xls, and .xlsx files.
To open an attachment, tap it inside the message, and it will automatically begin downloading.
How to Compose an Email Message
- From the Home screen, tap Mail.
- In the bottom right corner, tap the Compose Mail icon. (This icon appears in the same place in all Mail screens so that it’s always accessible.)
- Tap the To field. Either tap the + button to add a contact without typing or use the onscreen keyboard to start typing the email address of the recipient. As you type, the iPhone will suggest email addresses from your contacts. You may select one by scrolling and tapping the desired address.
- Tap the Subject field. Type your message subject.
- Tap below the Subject field in the body of the message. Type your message.
- When you’re ready, tap Send in the upper right corner. To cancel your message and not send it, tap Cancel in the upper left corner.
Mail Settings
You can adjust a number of mail settings—font size, the number of recent messages shown at one time, signature at the end of your sent emails, and so on—by accessing your iPhone’s mail’s settings through the Settings button on the Home screen.
