How to Use Voicemail on Your iPhone

The iPhone is the first mobile phone to offer a service that Apple calls visual voicemail. Rather than have to call into a voicemail system and listen to your voicemail messages sequentially, you can access your voicemail messages from a list on the Voicemail screen of your iPhone and listen to them in any order you choose. To listen to a voicemail:
  1. From the Home screen, tap the Phone icon.
  2. Tap the Voicemail icon in the lower right corner. (If the Voicemail icon shows a small red bubble with a number in it, this number indicates how many new voicemails you have waiting for you.)
  3. The Visual Voicemail screen appears, listing all your voicemails in a menu. Unheard voicemails are marked with a blue dot. You can play back any voicemail from the list just by tapping on it.
     
Once you’ve heard the message, you can return the call by tapping the green Call Back button or delete it by tapping the red Delete button. For more options—such as adding the phone number to your contacts or responding by text message—tap the blue arrow to the right of the caller’s name or phone number.

How to Set Your Voicemail Greeting

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Phone icon.
  2. Tap the Voicemail icon.
  3. Tap the Greeting button in the upper left corner. This takes you to the Greeting screen.
  4. Make a selection by tapping either Default or Custom. If you select Default, the voicemail greeting will be an automated voice.
  5. To make a personalized greeting, tap Custom, then tap Record and immediately record your message. Tap Stop when you’ve finished.
  6. Tap Play to review your message. If you aren’t happy with the way it turned out, tap Record to redo it.
  7. When you’re happy with your message, tap Save in the upper right corner.
If you’ve already recorded a message, you can change it by following the same process as that listed above.
