How to Use Your iPhone as an iPod
The iPhone also doubles as a fully functional iPod that plays both audio and video and works in the same way as the iPod Touch. (For more on how to use an iPod, see the Quamut guide to iPod & iTunes.)
To access your iPhone’s iPod mode, tap the iPod icon in the bottom right corner of the Home screen. The icon will take you to whatever was the last screen you were on the last time you left iPod mode. Five new icons will appear at the bottom of the iPod mode screen: Playlists, Artists, Songs, Videos, and More. These icons allow you to access your iPod media content.
How to Customize the iPod Icon Bar
Unlike the other sets of icons on the iPhone, the bar of icons that appear at the bottom of the iPod screen is customizable. You can select from choices such as Albums, Genres, Audiobooks, or Songs. To customize the icon bar:
- On any iPod screen, tap More.
- In the upper left corner, tap Edit. This button will bring you to the Configure screen.
- Use your finger to drag the icons you wish to place in your icon bar.
- When you’re finished, tap Done.
How to Buy from the iTunes Wi-Fi Store
You can purchase songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Store directly through your iPhone. The iTunes Wi-Fi Store is a pared-down version of the regular iTunes Store. It doesn’t offer TV shows, movies, or podcasts. Songs are charged to the billing information that you’ve provided through your Apple ID or iTunes account.
You can access the iTunes Wi-Fi Store by tapping the iTunes icon on the Home screen. However, you must be connected to the web via a Wi-Fi network—not via AT&T’s cellular data network—in order for this function to work.
How to Navigate the iTunes Wi-Fi Store
The bottom of the iTunes Wi-Fi Store screen has four icons:
- Featured: Offers songs featured by the Store
- Top Tens: Offers compilations of top songs in various genres or collections
- Search: Lets you search the entire contents of the Store
- Downloads: Shows the songs that you’ve already downloaded on your iPhone
