Other iPhone Applications
Beyond the big four iPhone applications of phone, email, web browser, and iPod, the iPhone provides a slew of other applications that you can access by clicking their icons from the Home screen.
- SMS: Allows you to send and receive text messages.
- Calendar: Opens iPhone’s calendar program.
- Photos: Lets you view photos, set up photos as your iPhone’s “wallpaper,” or email your photos.
- Camera: Brings you to camera mode, in which you can take pictures using your iPhone’s built-in camera.
- YouTube: Lets you connect to YouTube to view videos.
- Stocks: Tracks stock prices in near real time.
- Maps: Connects you to a Google Maps interface in which you can look up addresses through GPS and also get map-based telephone listings. For example, if you search for “Chinese restaurant,” you’ll get names and phone numbers of local Chinese restaurants and also see their locations displayed on a map.
- Weather: Lets you check the current or expected weather for any location.
- Clock, Calculator, Notes: Opens basic utility apps that let you check the time, do math, make notes to yourself, and so on.
- Settings: From Settings, you can control aspects of your iPhone’s display and function, including date and time, sounds and ringtones, brightness, wallpaper, Wi-Fi functionality and network, passwords and security, and auto-lock. You can also use Settings to set up your iPhone to work with a Bluetooth headset.
To download more applications to your iPhone, browse the App Store in iTunes. Apple Inc. offers more than 1,000 applications from eBay to the instant messaging service, AIM. More than 125 applications are free, and many others are $9.99 or less.
