Instructions

Making the Central Dangle

  1. Slide one 3mm silver bead and one large 40mm amethyst drop onto a 2-1/2" (6.4 cm) ball-end head pin.
  2. Bend the top of the ball-end pin 45°. Hold the pin with the round-nose pliers and bend the pin around the pliers. Place this loop onto the first link of the silver chain. Using the chain-nose pliers, hold the loop and twist the wire to secure the silver bead, the amethyst drop, and the silver chain link.
  3. Cut the chain, leaving a 1/2" (1.3 cm) length attached.
  4. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with the second 40mm amethyst drop, but this time measure and cut the silver chain to leave a 2" (5.1 cm) length attached.

Starting the Chain

  1. With the 24-gauge wire, use the round-nose pliers to make a loop about 3/4" (1.9 cm) from the end. Place both chain ends attached to the two large amethyst drops onto this loop. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and twist to secure. Cut off the shorter wire end.
  2. Slide the 24-gauge wire through one 20mm amethyst nugget. Bend the wire at the top about 45°. Using the round-nose pliers, bend the wire around to secure.
  3. Cut the chain to make six segments in the following lengths: two short segments each 1-1/2" (3.8 cm), two medium segments each 1-3/4" (4.4 cm), and two long segments each 2" (5.1 cm). Count the links before cutting the chain to make sure all chain segments are identical.

Assembling the Chain

  1. Place the six chain segments onto the looped wire in the following order: long, medium, short, short, medium, long.
  2. After all the chain segments are in place on the wire loop, hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and wrap the wire around to secure all pieces.
  3. Cut 12 chain segments, each 3/4" (1.9 cm) in length. Again, count the links before cutting to make sure all of them are exactly the same length.
  4. Make a new wire loop using the round-nose pliers. Select three consecutive chains from one side, choosing one of each length: long, medium, and short. Place the three chains onto the loop.
  5. Hold this loop with the chain-nose pliers and twist the wire around to secure. Cut off the shorter wire end.
  6. Slide one 10mm amethyst bead onto the wire (figure 1). Bend the wire 45°, hold it with the round-nose pliers, and loop it around.

Starting the Second Half of the Chain

  1. Place three 3/4" (1.9 cm) chain segments onto the loop. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and wrap the wire around to secure. Cut off the excess wire.
  2. Make a new loop in the wire with the round-nose pliers. Place all three ends of the 3/4" (1.9 cm) chain segments onto the loop. Using the chain-nose pliers, twist the wire around to secure. Cut off the shorter wire end.
  3. Slide a 20mm amethyst nugget onto the wire. Bend the wire 45° and use the round-nose pliers to loop it. Place three 3/4" (1.9 cm) chain segments onto the loop and use the chain-nose pliers to wrap the wire to secure. Cut off the excess wire.
  4. Make a new loop in the wire using the round-nose pliers. Place three 3/4" (1.9 cm) chain segments onto the loop and twist the wires around to secure. Cut off the shorter wire end.
  5. Place another 10mm amethyst bead onto this wire. Bend the wire 45° and use the round-nose pliers to loop the wire around to secure.
  6. Cut six chain segments, each 3" (7.6 cm) in length. Place three of them onto the loop you’ve just made. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and wrap the wire around to secure. Cut off the excess wire.
  7. Pick up the three remaining chain segments (one each of short, medium, and long) from step 11. Repeat steps 11 through 19 to make the other side of the necklace.

Attaching the Lobster Clasp & Final Steps

  1. You’re now ready to attach the lobster clasp to the back of the necklace. Using the 24-gauge wire and round-nose pliers, make a new loop. Place the three chains from one side of the necklace onto this loop. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and twist the wires to secure them. Cut off the shorter wire end.
  2. Bend the wire 45° and loop it again with the round-nose pliers. Slide the lobster clasp onto this loop and hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers. Wrap the wire around the twist you made in step 21 and cut off the excess wire.
  3. On the other side of the necklace, make the hook for the clasp. Make a new loop in the wire. Place all three chains onto this loop and twist the wires to secure. Cut off the shorter wire end.
  4. Grip the wire with the rubberized round-nose pliers and loop it around. Then hold the loop with these pliers and wrap the wire around the twist you made in step 23. Cut off the excess wire.
