Making the Chain
- Using the ruler and wire cutters, cut a 3" (7.6 cm) segment from the 15" chain. Cut the remaining 12" (30.5 cm) to make the following segments: four segments each measuring 1-1/2" (3.8 cm), two segments each measuring 2-1/2" (6.4 cm), and one segment that’s 1" (2.5 cm) in length.
- Attach one of the 2-1/2" (6.4 cm) segments to the length of the 2.5mm toggle chain with a twisted loop link; using the round-nose pliers, make a loop 3/4" (1.9 cm) from the end of the 24-gauge wire. Slide this loop onto the final link of the 2-1/2" (6.4 cm) segment. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and twist to secure. Cut off the shorter wire end.
- Using the round-nose pliers, make a new loop in the wire, this time sliding it onto the end link of the toggle chain. Hold this second loop with the chain-nose pliers and wrap the wire around the twist you made in step 2.
- With the 26-gauge wire, create a loop 3/4" (1.9 cm) from the end with the round-nose pliers. Slide it onto the remaining end of the thinner necklace chain (not the toggle chain). Hold this loop with pliers and wrap the wires around to secure. Cut off the shorter wire end.
- Slide onto this wire the stones for this first section, as follows: one 2mm gold-filled bead, one 3mm peridot briolette, one 4mm irregular gold briolette, one 3mm peridot briolette, and one 2mm gold-filled bead.
- After the beads are in place, bend the wire 45°. Use the round-nose pliers to make a new loop and slide a 1-1/2" (3.8 cm) chain length onto this loop. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and wrap the wire around to secure. Cut off the excess wire.
- To work the remainder of the chain section of the necklace, repeat steps 4 through 6, following the pattern in figure 1, keeping the 3" (7.6 cm) chain segment in the middle. Following are the stone patterns used for the other sections on the chain: The first and sixth bead sections are as described in step 5; the second and fifth bead sections are two 3mm apatite briolettes, one 2mm gold-filled bead, and two 3mm apatite briolettes; the third and fourth bead sections are one 4mm citrine briolette, one 3mm peridot briolette, and one citrine briolette.

Creating the Dangle
- Find the middle link of the central 3" chain segment. Using the 24-gauge wire and the round-nose pliers, make a new loop 3/4" (1.9 cm) from the end of the wire. Slide the loop onto this middle link. Hold the loop using the chain-nose pliers and twist the wires around to secure. Cut off the shorter wire end.
- Slide one 3mm peridot briolette, one 4mm irregular gold briolette, and one 3mm peridot briolette onto the wire. Bend the wire 45°, loop it around on the round-nose pliers, and place the remaining 1" (2.5 cm) chain segment on this loop. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and wrap the wire around to secure. Cut off the excess wire.
- Take all 18 of the head pins, both 1-1/2" (3.8 cm) and 1" (2.5 cm) lengths. Set aside one of each size for the closure of the necklace; the other 16 will be used to decorate the 1" (2.5 cm) hanging chain segment.
- Begin by selecting one head pin and sliding two to four beads onto it. (For each head pin, combine the stones and gold-filled beads in a different order to create variety.) After the beads are in place, use the chain-nose pliers to bend the head pin about 3/4" (9.5 mm) from the top. Place the round-nose pliers above the bend and loop the wire around (figure 2).

- Slide this head pin onto the wire loop from which the 1" (2.5 cm) chain length is hanging. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and wrap the wire around to secure. (Use two pair of chain-nose pliers for this, one in each hand, because the wire length is very short and it’s difficult to maneuver with your fingers.) Cut off the excess wire.
- Repeat steps 11 and 12 until you’ve placed all 16 head pins along the links of the 1" (2.5 cm) chain. While working down the chain, spread out the placement of the four 1-1/2" (3.8 cm) head pins among the twelve 1" (2.5 cm) head pins.
Making the Closure & Final Steps
- Begin working on the closure of the necklace. Select one of the head pins you reserved and repeat step 11. Place a few stones on it and slide it onto the bottom link of the toggle chain. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and wrap the wire around to secure. Cut off the excess wire. Repeat for the remaining head pin, this time attaching it a few links up the toggle chain. Cut off the excess wire.
- Attach the lobster clasp to the other end of the chain. Using the 24-gauge wire and round-nose pliers, make a new loop. Slide the final link of the necklace chain onto this loop. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and twist the wires to secure. Cut off the shorter wire end.
- Bend the wire 45° and loop it again with the round-nose pliers. Slide the lobster clasp onto this loop. Hold the loop with the chain-nose pliers and wrap the wire around the twist you made in step 15. Cut off the excess wire.
