Getting Started

Believe it or not, this project features simple beading techniques. They’re simply layered together to produce an incredibly rich spectacle of pearls and beads.

There are dozens of ways to stitch beads together, but you’ll only need to know one, ladder stitch, for this project. To make the ladder stitch, begin by stringing two beads. Pass through the beads again to make a circle and manipulate them so they sit side by side (figure 1). String one bead and pass down through the second bead initially strung and up through the one just strung. Repeat to add one bead at a time until you reach the desired length (figure 2).

  • 40 peridot freshwater pearls, 6mm button
  • 20 ivory freshwater pearls, 6mm top-drilled potato
  • 1 ivory freshwater pearl, 6mm center-drilled potato
  • 6 ivory crystal pearls, 6mm x 16mm vertically-drilled teardrop
  • 2 dark olive crystal pearl rounds, 12mm
  • 2 dark olive crystal pearl rounds, 8mm
  • 7 dark olive crystal pearl rounds, 6mm
  • 10 iridescent smoke crystal bicones, 6mm
  • 30 iridescent smoke crystal bicones, 4mm
  • 10 sterling silver seamless rounds, 3mm
  • 22 sterling silver seamless rounds, 2mm
  • 5 grams of metallic silver charlottes
  • 1 sterling silver 22-gauge head pin, 1" (2.5 cm) in length
  • 10 sterling silver 22-gauge eye pins, 1-1/2" (3.8 cm) in length
  • 10 sterling silver 2.5mm jump rings
  • 1 sterling silver fish hook clasp, 18mm
  • Sterling silver figure-eight chain (large links are 6mm x 10mm), 8" (20.3 cm) in length
  • Moss-colored, 6-pound braided beading thread
  • Jeweler’s glue (available at jewelry making supply stores)

  • Wire cutters
  • Chain-nose pliers
  • Round-nose pliers
  • Scissors
  • English beading needle, size 12
  • Thread burner
