Getting Started

The dangling beads on this necklace, called fringe, are made by threading beads together along one length of beading thread. The diagram in the instructions will show you how. It’s really simple.

Skill Level

  • Experienced Beginner

Materials

  • 2 seed beads of any color, 11°
  • Red seed beads, 6°
  • 24 gold round beads, 2mm
  • 22 gold rondels
  • 16 red faceted beads, 6mm
  • 5 red faceted teardrops with a vertical hole, 12mm
  • 2 gold clamshells
  • Gold lobster-claw clasp and jump ring
  • Beading thread, size D
A note on bead sizes: Some beads are measured by how many will fit on one inch of string. This number is expressed like this: X°, meaning X number of beads will fit on one inch of string. For instance, the 11° beads called for in this project fit 11 beads on one inch of string. If you’re shopping at a bead shop, the bead size is pronounced wih an "oh" at the end, as in “eleven-oh.”

Tools & Supplies

  • Beading needle, size 10
  • Scissors
  • Clear nail polish with nylon
  • Round-nosed pliers (if using head pins)
  • Needle-nosed pliers (if using head pins)
The instructions call for using nail polish to glue some of the knots and beads. It’s important to use a brand with nylon in it (the type used to strengthen nails). Regular nail polish (without nylon) uses a chemical that could melt the bead thread or damage beads. Nail polish with nylon is pretty common and easy to find.

Finished Size

  • 16" to 17" (40.6 cm to 43.2 cm)
