Kemps Basics

Kemps, sometimes called kent or signal, is a card game that combines speed, skill, and luck in an exciting combination. Though a relatively recent creation, kemps has rapidly gained in popularity and spread by word of mouth.

Number of Players in Kemps

Kemps is most often played by four players split into two teams of two. The game can be played with more players as long as those players are likewise split into teams of two. Generally speaking, playing with more than eight players (four teams of two) is not advised.

The Object of Kemps

Each team’s goal in kemps is to win points. Teams can score points in a round of kemps in one of two ways:
  1. Get four of a kind and say “kemps”: If one player on a team accumulates four of a kind (four cards of equal rank), and the second player on the team then says “kemps,” the team wins a point.
  2. Say “stop kemps” when an opposing player has accumulated four of a kind: If an opposing player has four of a kind, but you or your partner says “stop kemps” before the opposing player’s partner says “kemps,” your team wins the point.

The Cards Used in Kemps

Kemps is played using a standard deck of 52 cards (with no jokers).
