Getting Started
In this project, you’ll learn to easily create faux lace with finer yarn and larger needles, and see how an airy, open stitch pattern is accomplished through simple repeats.
If you’re accustomed to using medium weight yarns and needles of a specific size, don’t be afraid to try a new approach: using larger needles with the finer yarn gives this sweater’s stitches an open and airy look.
Good needles can make all the difference in your knitting experience. For silk, cashmere, and mohair, rosewood needles work especially well. Rosewood is softer than bamboo, smooth, and extremely lightweight. These needles have become popular and are available through most yarn shops and online retailers. You’ll find that your hands don’t get tired as easily with these needles, and the yarn stays put without slipping.
Using the Openwork Stitch
- This is an easy 2-stitch pattern. This stitch forms the openings or eyelets in the knitting to make the lace pattern.
- First row: *yo, SKP; repeat from * to end. Usually a knit stitch is added at the beginning and end of each row.
- Following row: Always slip the previous row’s SKP stitch and knit the previous row’s yo stitch.
- Following your lace is important for you to keep track of any inadvertently dropped or missing yo stitches—a very common mistake. This will maintain a consistent and even fabric.
