Types of Macs

The Mac comes in different types and sizes, with desktop and laptop varieties ranging from basic to top-of-the-line.

Intel-Based Macs

Beginning in 2006, Apple reworked its entire model line to include Intel processors, which are traditionally associated with PCs. A processor basically acts as the brain of the computer, and its speed is usually measured in megahertz (MHz) or gigahertz (GHz). The Intel® Core™ 2 Duo processor has two chips in one, doubling the processing power.

Desktops

Unlike the clunky off-white desktop boxes of yore, the Mac desktop computer is a sleek, space-minimizing beauty.
  • iMac: The iMac is an everyman’s computer: minimal and easy to use. All the components—the 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo processor, memory, hard drive, and CD/DVD player—are tucked away behind the monitor, in a slim 1.25" case. The glossy display comes in 20" and 24" sizes. iMacs start at $1,199.

  • Mac Mini: Starting at $599, the Mac Mini is the most affordable Mac—and, at 2" tall, 6.5" square, with a weight of less than 3 pounds, it’s one of the smallest desktop computers on the market. Though it doesn’t include the traditional peripherals—keyboard, mouse, and monitor—it comes with the same robust operating system, iLife, and the Intel Core 2 Duo processor.
  • Mac Pro: The Mac Pro is generally used for high-end graphic design. A basic Mac Pro setup starts at $2,499, and includes two dual-core Intel Xeon© processors.

Laptops

A laptop is ideal for students, frequent travelers, or those with less space to devote to a full computer setup.
  • MacBook Pro: The MacBook Pro follows Apple’s highly successful PowerBook. It comes with the Intel Core 2 Duo system, a built-in iSight camera, and remote. It starts at $1,999 and comes in 15" and 17" models.
  • MacBook: The MacBook has much of the same functionality as the MacBook Pro but is smaller (13") and starts at $1,099.
