How to Buy Mangoes
Mangoes taste best when eaten at peak ripeness. By following the guidelines below, you can ensure that you select ripe mangoes every time.
- Look for: Mangoes with a sweetly fragrant aroma and skin that yields slightly to the touch. A perfectly ripe mango should be neither too hard nor too soft. The skin may have a few black spots—an indication that the fruit is very ripe.
- Avoid: Mangoes with shriveled skin and a fibrous flesh. These mangoes have been picked too early and will have acidic, unpleasant-tasting flesh. They’re also of inferior nutritional value compared to ripe mangoes.
