About This Drug

Memantine is an NMDA (N-methyl-d-aspartate) receptor antagonist used to treat moderate to severe Alzheimer’s disease. It can help slow progression of the disease; it is not a cure.

Memantine appears to protect the brain cells against high levels of glutamate, a chemical that is released at high levels by cells that have been damaged by Alzheimer’s disease. This drug regulates the release of glutamate.
