About This Drug
Methylphenidate is an amphetamine-like drug that works as a mild central nervous system stimulant. It is used primarily for the treatment of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children; for children and adults who have social, psychological, and educational disorders; and for narcolepsy (a condition characterized by sudden collapses into sleep) in adults.
Methylphenidate stimulates the brain stem, which leads to improved alertness, attention span, and concentration. This drug causes an increase in the levels of serotonin and dopamine (nerve transmitters) in the brain, which helps restore the balance between serotonin and other brain chemicals involved in behavior, mood, and thought.
