Important Precautions
- Tell your health-care practitioner if you are sensitive or allergic to methylphenidate or other drugs. Also inform your health-care practitioner about any other medical conditions you suffer from, especially severe anxiety, tension, agitation, glaucoma or other visual problems, high blood pressure, motor tics or spasms, Tourette’s syndrome, or a seizure disorder.
- Chronic or abusive use of methylphenidate can lead to addiction. This drug should be used with caution in anyone with a history of drug or alcohol abuse or of mental illness.
- Before having any type of surgery or dental procedure, inform your surgeon or dentist that you are taking methylphenidate.
- This drug may conceal signs of temporary fatigue. Until you know how methylphenidate affects you, do not drive a car, operate machinery, or perform other tasks that require concentration.
- Methylphenidate is not an appropriate remedy for children whose symptoms are caused by stress or a psychiatric disorder.
Pregnant Women
It is not known whether methylphenidate causes birth defects. If you are or suspect you may be pregnant, consult your health-care practitioner before taking this drug. Methylphenidate should be used only when the benefits of therapy clearly outweigh the potential risks to the fetus.
Small amounts of methylphenidate may pass into breast milk. As a result, your health-care practitioner may advise you to discontinue nursing until you complete treatment with this drug.
Seniors
Low starting doses are typically used in people age 60 and older. Older individuals may be at greater risk for side effects such as nervousness, agitation, insomnia, high blood pressure, angina, and heart rhythm disturbances.
