The Patch Tool’s Use Pattern Feature

The Patch toolbar includes a feature called Use Pattern that lets you apply a pattern to areas that you’ve selected with the Patch tool. When you click Use Pattern in the Patch toolbar, Photoshop fills the selected area with the currently selected pattern. Photoshop patterns consist of specific textures, such as canvas or wood, and actual patterns, such as plaid, that you can apply to all or part of an image. Photoshop comes with dozens of built-in patterns, all of which you can access through the Patch toolbar. You can also create your own patterns from scratch or import them from other image files.

When to Use the Use Pattern Feature

Since you’ll probably use the Patch tool mostly to remove flaws in an image, it’s unlikely that you’ll use the Use Pattern feature often—rather than use a pattern to patch a flawed part of an image, you’ll want to use pixels from a clean portion of the same image. Even so, if you ever do want to use a specific pattern to patch a selected part of an image, the Patch tool’s Use Pattern feature is the best way to do it.

Where to Find the Use Pattern Feature

The Use Pattern feature consists of a button and a tiny icon of the currently selected pattern located on the right side of the Patch toolbar.

When you click on the tiny arrow next to the pattern icon, a drop-down menu appears that lists several of the available built-in patterns and lets you access features that you can use to load more patterns, create your own patterns, and so on.

How to Use the Use Pattern Feature

The Use Pattern feature is very simple and requires just a few steps:
  1. Make a new selection: Use the Patch tool to select the portion of the image that you’d like to patch with a pattern.
  2. Select the pattern: Click the pattern icon in the Patch toolbar or the tiny arrow next to it. If you don’t see a pattern that you’d like to use in the drop-down menu that appears, click on the tiny right arrow near the top right corner of the drop-down menu. A submenu will appear to the right that contains several more pattern categories, such as Artist Surfaces and Rock Paper. Each pattern category contains a set of individual patterns. Once you select a category, its set of patterns loads into the drop-down menu. To select a pattern, simply click on it. The tiny pattern icon in the Patch toolbar will switch to the new pattern that you’ve selected.

  3. Apply the pattern: To apply the pattern that you’ve chosen to the selected area in your image, click on the Use Pattern button in the Patch toolbar. Photoshop will then fill the selected area with the pattern.
