Scoring in Pinochle
At the end of each round, the two teams, starting with the bidding team, tally up their points for the round and their total points for the game.
Tallying Points for the Round
The score that a team earns in a round depends on a few factors and differs depending on whether the team is the bidding or nonbidding team.
The Nonbidding Team’s Points for the Round
As long as the nonbidding team won at least one trick during the course of the round, the points it earns for the round are equal to the points it got from its melds and the points it got during play. If the team failed to win any tricks, though, it gets no points.
The Bidding Team’s Points for the Round
The points earned by the bidding team depend on whether it earned as many points as it bid:
- If the bidding team makes its bid (i.e., the points it earns are equal to or greater than the amount bid): The bidding team gets all those points.
- If the bidding team doesn’t make its bid: The bidding team loses the value of its bid.
Tallying Points for the Game
Each team, starting with the bidding team, adds its points from the round to its total score over many rounds:
- If a team reaches 1,000 points (in partnership auction pinochle) or 3,550 points (in double-pack pinochle), then the game is over. If both teams reach the necessary point values to win in the same round, then the bidding team wins.
- If neither team reaches the point level needed to win, the deal moves to the left, and a new round begins.
