About This Drug
Potassium is used to treat low levels of potassium in the body (hypokalemia) and mild high blood pressure (hypertension). Normally a well-balanced diet provides all the potassium you need for good health. However, certain diseases (such as kidney disease or gastrointestinal problems accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea) and medications (such as diuretics, or “water pills”) deplete your body’s supply of this vital mineral.
Potassium is essential for the proper functioning of the kidneys, heart, and other organs. A shortage can lead to problems such as nausea, vomiting, muscle weakness, mood changes, and irregular heartbeat. Supplements make up for any depletion of potassium. They are available in a wide variety of brands, types, and forms. Depending on your particular needs, your health-care practitioner may prescribe potassium chloride, potassium gluconate, or potassium-containing salt substitutes.
