How to Customize Premier Pro Keyboard Shortcuts

In addition to providing hundreds of built-in keyboard shortcuts, Premier Pro lets you create new custom shortcuts or modify existing shortcuts. To get started, go to Edit > Keyboard Customization. The dialog box shown below will then appear.

  1. In the Keyboard Customization dialog box, use the topmost pull-down menu to select the set of keyboard shortcuts that you’d like to modify or add to. If you’d like to work with the default set of Premier Pro shortcuts (the most common choice), choose Adobe Premier Pro Factory Defaults. You can also modify or create shortcuts based on those in Avid Xpress DV 3.5 and Final Cut Pro 4.0. Adobe includes this option for users who are transitioning from those video editing programs to Premier Pro.
  2. Click on the second pull-down menu to select the category of shortcuts you’d like to modify. The available categories are:
    1. Application: Commands located in Premier Pro’s main menu bar
    2. Panels: Commands from Premier Pro’s panels and pop‑up menus
    3. Tools: Commands related to Premier Pro’s various tools

  3. Click the triangle next to the category that contains the commands you’d like to change.

  4. To modify a particular command, click on its keyboard Shortcut in the shortcut field. If the Shortcut field is blank, click on the blank area to select it.
  5. Enter the keyboard shortcut that you’d like to use for the command. Premier Pro will warn you if your shortcut conflicts with any existing shortcuts. If there is a conflict, you’ll have the option to click Undo (to revert to the command’s original shortcut), Go To (to view the command that currently uses the conflicting shortcut), Clear (to delete the shortcut you entered), or Redo (to enter another shortcut for the command).
  6. Repeat steps 2–6 above to change as many shortcuts as you’d like.
When you’re finished, click Save As, type a name for the set you’ve modified, and click Save. From now on, Premier Pro will load your custom set of shortcuts when you start the program. To use the default set instead, click on Keyboard Customization in the Edit menu and choose Premier Pro Factory Defaults in the dialog box that appears.
