What Is Identity Theft?

Identity theft occurs when someone steals your personal information and uses it to assume your identity in order to commit fraud or other crimes.

Types of Identity Theft

Identity theft can take a variety of forms, from simple credit card fraud to serious criminal identity theft.
  • Account takeover: The thief uses your existing credit card or bank accounts to make purchases or withdrawals, stealing your money and damaging your credit (your documented financial reputation).
  • Application fraud: The thief uses your personal information to open new accounts in your name, usually with a fraudulent address. Also known as true name fraud. Though this type of identity theft doesn’t result in lost money, it can damage your credit.
  • Criminal identity theft: The thief uses your personal information to assume your identity. The thief gives your name and presents counterfeit ID to law enforcement when questioned or arrested for a crime. In a worst-case scenario, you could be prosecuted for the actions of the thief who has stolen your identity.
