Drug Interactions
Tell your health-care practitioner and pharmacist if you are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter drugs, as well as any vitamins, herbs, or other supplements. Possible drug interactions include the following:
- Do not take monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) antidepressants at the same time as or within 14 days of propoxyphene.
- Do not take other central nervous system depressants (such as tranquilizers, barbiturates, sleep aids, antidepressants, or alcohol) with propoxyphene. This combination causes increased drowsiness, and in some cases has resulted in drug-related deaths.
- Drugs such as cimetidine increase blood levels and thus effects of propoxyphene.
- Naltrexone may reduce the effectiveness of propoxyphene.
- Propoxyphene may increase the blood-thinning effects of warfarin.
- Do not smoke cigarettes while taking propoxyphene.
Food, Vitamin, and Herbal Interactions
Do not take propoxyphene with herbs such as hops, kava, passionflower, and valerian. These can increase its sedative effects.
