Instructions

  1. Use the chalk marker to draw a simple curved seamline for the hill on the green print fabric. Mark a cutting line 1⁄4" (6 mm) above the seamline (figure 1). Cut out the hill section for the quilt top.

  2. Fold under the seam allowance along the top of the hill section, and press. Lay it right side up on the right side of the light blue print fabric for the sky. Pin the hill and sky sections together at the hill seamline. Trace the seamline onto the sky section, and mark a cutting line 1⁄4" (6 mm) below (figure 2). Cut out the sky section.

Piecing Together the Hill and Sky

  1. Sew the hill and sky sections on the seamline with right sides together to make the quilt top. Clip the curved seam allowance where necessary so the fabric lays flat. Press the seam toward the hill. Trim the quilt top to measure 8" x 10" (20.3 x 25.4 cm).
  2. Thread the embroidery needle with two strands of green floss. Sew a buttonhole stitch along the seam.
  3. Cut twelve 2" (5 cm) squares from the assorted mini-print fabrics. Reserve the remaining fabrics for the yo-yo circles. Sew two rows of six squares each for the quilt top border. Press the seams of each row in one direction.
  4. Cut a 2" x 12" (5 x 30.5 cm) strip from the pale pink and medium pink fabrics for the quilt top border. Reserve the remaining fabrics for the yo-yo circles.

Sewing the Borders

  1. Sew one pieced border strip to the upper edge of the quilt top. Press the seam away from the center. Sew the other pieced border strip to the right-hand edge of the quilt top, and press in the same way. Sew one 2" x 12" border strip to the bottom edge of the quilt top. Trim the strip even with the quilt top on the left-hand side. Press the seam away from the center. In the same way, sew the other 2" x 12" (5 x 30.5 cm) border strip to the left-hand side of the quilt top, and press.
  2. Use the pencil to trace the yo-yo circle templates onto the matte side of the freezer paper. Trace the larger circle two times and the smaller circle three times. Cut out the freezer paper patterns.
  3. Press the patterns, shiny side down, on the reserved pink print fabrics. Cut out the yo-yo circles.
  4. Thread a needle with pink sewing thread. Double the thread, and knot the ends. To make each yo-yo flower, fold under the raw edge of a fabric circle 1⁄4" (6 mm). Sew running stitches close to the fold. Pull the thread to gather the fabric snugly. Secure the thread with several small stitches, and trim the thread tail.

Adding the Flowers

  1. Arrange the yo-yo flowers on the quilt top above the hill section. Sew each flower to the quilt top with small hand stitches.
  2. Thread the embroidery needle with three to six strands of green floss or green silk ribbon to sew the flower stems. Sew some of the stems with a stem stitch and some with a row of small, horizontal straight stitches. Couch green silk ribbon for one stem (figure 3); thread the small needle with green sewing thread to sew a free-style row of green seed beads on this stem.

  3. Thread the embroidery needle with pink silk ribbon to sew lazy daisy stitches as petals around two of the flowers (figure 4). Thread the small needle with pink sewing thread to sew seed beads as desired around some of the flowers.

Creating the Backing and Final Steps

  1. Cut a 13" x 15" (33 x 38.1 cm) backing and a 12-1⁄2" x 4-1⁄2" (31.8 x 11.4 cm) hanging sleeve from the lavender fabric. Cut the remaining fabric on the true bias fabric grain into binding strips 1-1⁄2" (3.8 cm) wide. (The true bias grain runs at a 45° angle to the fabric selvage.)
  2. Stack and baste the quilt layers. Thread the embroidery needle with two strands of light blue floss to quilt the sky in curving waves. Use green floss to quilt the hill in a meandering stipple design. Use the small needle and green sewing thread to sew bugle beads in a scattered arrangement on the hill.
  3. Bind the quilt, using a 1⁄2" (1.3 cm) seam allowance. As you stitch the binding at each corner, shape the binding into a gentle curve.
  4. Sew the hanging sleeve to the backing.
