About This Drug
Riluzole is prescribed to slow the progress of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease). ALS is a progressive and eventually fatal disease of the nervous system. Riluzole is the only medication thus far known to treat it.
Although no one knows exactly how this drug works, it slows the release of glutamate, which is thought to damage important nerve centers. Riluzole may delay the need for a breathing tube, but it is not a cure for ALS.
