A Sample Plain-Text Résumé
Nowadays, the PDF file format makes it easy to transmit your résumé electronically and preserve the document’s fonts and formatting. If you have to transmit your résumé via a plain-text email or a form on a website, however, any special formatting you’ve used will likely come out garbled. In these cases, use the following simplified plain-text résumé format to display or transmit your résumé via email or the web.
- Align all material flush with the left margin, with clear double spaces between paragraphs and sections.
- Eliminate all graphical elements, including bullets, italics, bold type, unusual fonts, and underlined type.
- If your résumé will be part of a searchable electronic database, make sure that your language includes the kinds of keywords that employers will use to search résumés. Use multiple versions of the job title in which you’re interested. For example, don’t just say “accountant”; also use specific words such as “tax preparation” and “certified public accountant.”
