How to Work with Type
The typeface, or type, that you use makes a definite statement on your page. For instance, delicate, small-scale letters would complement a photo of a newborn baby, whereas fancy wedding-invitation script would look out of place in a layout about a boys’ soccer team. Choose type that reinforces the feel of your story.
Different Kinds of Type
Type falls into a few categories:
- Serif: This type has small cross lines on the ends of letters. Use classic or modern serifs for long stretches of copy.
- Sans serif: This type has no cross lines at the ends of letters. Classic or modern sans serif is harder to read in large blocks but works well for titles and photo captions.
-
Decorative: This category includes script, distressed, ornamental, or any type that’s not serif or sans serif. Decorative type, in moderation, can be used to make titles that reflect the spirit of the layout. But it doesn’t work well for journaling unless it’s very easy to read.

Readability of Type
Page layout software can help you manipulate type in many ways. There are two main ways to make type more legible:
- Increase its leading: Leading refers to the vertical space between each line of type.
- Increasing its kerning: Kerning refers to the horizontal space between letters.
Ready-Made Type
Ready-made type is manufacturer-produced titles or individual letters that you can use on a page. It comes in a variety of forms, including stickers, die-cuts, rub-ons, and chipboard. Larger type is best used for titles; smaller type is better for journaling. Rubber or acrylic stamps can also be used to create titles and journaling.
Computer Type
Depending on your access to and comfort with a computer, you can take advantage of printed type for titles or journaling. You can create computer-generated text in many different typefaces. Printed type gives you the ability to edit copy and size it to fit in a specific space. If you have a color printer, you have the added capability of printing type in color. Printed type is also a good choice if you want to include a lot of journaling.
Handwriting
Your own handwriting gives the page a more unique and personal quality than computer-generated type. Even if you prefer other kinds of type, you may want to include handwriting on at least some of your scrapbooking pages.
