Instructions

  1. Cut a cuff from the shirt, trimming close to the seam. Button the cuff, and turn it inside out. Hand sew a running stitch along the closure edge of the cuff, being careful not to sew through to the front of the fabric.
  2. Using a drinking glass sized to fit snugly into the cuff, trace circles onto both pieces of felt for cutting. Cut both circles. Set the stiff felt circle aside for the bottom piece.
  3. Pin the regular felt circle to the raw edge of the cuff with the right sides together. Whipstitch the pinned pieces together (see figure 3).

  4. Turn the cuff right side out and stuff tightly with the polyester fiberfill, until the cuff is about two-thirds full. Then, fill with rice or lentils to weight the bottom of the pincushion.
  5. Fit the stiff felt circle into the bottom of the pincushion, over the rice or lentils. Hand-sew shut using a whipstitch.
  6. Select a coordinating ribbon to decorate the seam along the top edge and hide the stitching. Sew in place with a whipstitch.
  7. Thread the needle with black embroidery floss and knot it. Push the needle through the location for the eyes, letting the ends of the thread form the eyelashes. Sew parallel stitches to form the eye shape.
  8. Keep the cuff button in place for the nose, or replace it with a vintage or more interesting button. Shape a mouth with running stitches, using maroon embroidery floss and hiding the knot in the inside of the cuff.
  9. Embellish pins with pompoms, beads, buttons and other small items to make ears, horns, antennae, etc.
