Spades Basics

Spades is a partnership bidding game in which two teams of two players each bid on the number of tricks they’ll take. A trick refers to the cards played by all players on a single turn, with the highest card winning the trick.

The goal of spades is to win as many tricks as were bid and to prevent the other team from doing the same. Players on a team cooperate to achieve this goal and hence work as a partnership. Spades is simpler than many other bidding games, such as bridge, and is considered a social game.

The History of Spades

Spades evolved from whist, another bidding game with similar rules. It was first played in its current form in the late 1930s in Ohio. Spades quickly spread throughout the United States but was slow to gain popularity elsewhere. In recent years, though, internet play has resulted in a surge in the popularity of spades worldwide.
