Important Precautions
- Always inform your health-care practitioner about any other medical conditions you may have. Tramadol should not be taken if you are allergic to this or similar drugs, such as codeine or morphine. It should be used with caution if you have a head injury, liver or kidney disease, a history of convulsions or seizures, ulcers, or constipation.
- Seizures have occurred in patients taking tramadol at therapeutic doses. Inform your health-care practitioner of any history of seizures or head injury. The risk of seizure may be increased by combining tramadol with antidepressants, some antipsychotic medications, opioids, or other medications that reduce the seizure threshold.
- Tramadol can lead to physical and/or psychological addiction. This drug should be used with caution in anyone with a history of drug or alcohol abuse.
- If you plan to undergo surgery or a dental procedure, tell your health-care practitioner or dentist that you are taking tramadol.
- This drug can make you drowsy and less alert than usual. Until you know how tramadol affects you, do not drive a car, operate machinery, or perform other tasks that require concentration.
- When you first start taking this drug, you may feel lightheaded and experience dizziness or faintness when you rise quickly from a sitting or reclining position (postural hypotension). Try to get up slowly, and consult your health-care practitioner if the problem continues.
Pregnant Women
Tramadol has caused birth defects in animal studies. This medication should be avoided in pregnancy, especially during the first 3 months. Because tramadol may pass into breast milk, breastfeeding is not advisable while taking it.
