How to Clean a Vacuum Cleaner
Vacuum cleaners naturally attract lots of dust and dirt, which over time can cause the vacuum cleaner to lose effectiveness or even break down. Properly cleaning your vacuum cleaner will ensure that it lasts as long as possible. Ideally, you should inspect and clean your vacuum cleaner before every use. Since you probably won’t have the time to do this, try to clean your machine at least once per month. Before cleaning a vacuum cleaner, always make sure that it’s not plugged in.
Clean the Exterior
To clean a vacuum cleaner, first wipe down the external surfaces of the vacuum cleaner with a damp cloth to remove dust and dirt. Be sure to cover the metal or plastic surfaces of the base, as well as the hose, handle, and wheels.
Clean the Rest of the Vacuum
Once you’ve got the outside of the vacuum clean:
- To clean an upright: Flip the vacuum over and check the underside of the base (including the beater bar) for dirt, hair, or other obstructions. If you find a piece of string or a clump of hair tightly wound around the wheels, the beater bar, or any other moving part, you might need to cut it with a knife or scissors to remove it. If you have a canister or hand-held vacuum in addition to your upright, use it (with the crevice tool attachment) to vacuum away dirt and other debris around the upright’s moving parts.
- To clean a canister vacuum: Inspect and clean out any attachments that include moving parts, such as the beater bar attachment and the rug attachment. It’s also a good idea to clean out the bristles on the dust brush tool and the upholstery tool by using a damp cloth or paper towel.
