How to Clean a Burned Pot or Pan
If the inside of a pot or pan gets stained from scorched or burned food, you can usually remove the scorch marks as follows:
- Let the pot or pan cool.
- Fill it with cold water past the level of the highest burn mark.
- Add 3 tablespoons of baking soda.
- Bring the water to a boil, then turn off the heat and let the pot or pan sit for an hour.
- If necessary, scrub away the scorch mark with a sponge, cloth, or nylon pad.
If this doesn’t work, you can repeat the process and let the pot or pan sit for a longer period of time. If this still doesn’t solve the problem, you can try white vinegar and salt instead:
- Fill the pot or pan with a mixture of 1 part water to 1 part white vinegar.
- Stir in 1–2 tablespoons of salt.
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then turn off the heat and let the pot or pan sit.
- If necessary, scrub away the scorch mark with a sponge, cloth, or nylon pad.
If you’re working with aluminum or stainless steel, letting water sit in the pot or pan for more than an hour or so can cause discoloration or pitting.
